I see so many confessions on this blog that end up in childish arguments that get nowhere. There is, in my opinion, lots of things wrong with the current scene of artists. Now by no means does this apply to every single artist, I’m just formulating conclusions based on what I have observed.
Firstly, these “popular” blogs, most of them are actually nice people who are genuinely enjoyable to be around and have a good fanbase, that’s all fine and dandy. Then you get into the realm of nice “popular” artists whose fans give them a bad reputation either through thinly veiled hate or just complete devotion. THen there are the few “popular” artists who are naturally just complete jerks, now by no mean is this a majority, but I have noticed quite a few who just seem to think that… I’m not sure how to explain it, but they act as if their time is holy and you don’t deserve to waste it.
This moves on to the second major problem I have noticed, hate and intolerance. I know quite a few people who can’t stand a certain part of the art scene, be it Rule 34 or Grimdark or anything of the like. Personally, I find it all completely acceptable, just because someone doesn’t like that their favourite pony now has naught bits doesn’t make it any less of artistic expression, the same going for Grimdark when their favourite pony’s internal bits happen to be outside of their designated areas. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I personally have taken “love and tolerance” to heart and have applied it to my everyday life. Just because you personally don’t find it tasteful doesn’t make them any less valid points of artistic expression. And if you simply are not comfortable with it, there is always the unfollow/block button that is literally a single click away.
This perfectly segways into my third and final major point I feel the need to address, and that is people that decide to get into the art scene solely so that they can be adored and rabidly followed. I personally do my average-tier art because it is really the only thing in my life that makes me a little less depressed, and I have yet to get any formal training in it. In my mind, people like this are the root cause for all of the other problems mentioned above. They join the art scene simply so that they can become popular, often times they feel they can do this by directly making it a competition with others to “prove themselves,” as it would seem. They have this idea in their head that the tumblr pony artists are all gladiators and they are the next Spartacus that must violently murder all the other gladiators in order to secure their place, when in actuality the pony artists are more of… I’m trying to think of an adequate comparison in my sleep deprevity… like the School of Athens. What we should be doing is learning from each other and flourishing as a whole.
Again this is all my personal opinion and out of a whim I felt the need to voice it, I am honestly indifferent as to whether this gets published or what kind of reaction this spurns from people. I usually don’t voice my feelings on the matter, but every now and then I’ll get a spark of inspiration to try and make the world a better place… and I guess this is my meager contribution over the internet.
